Knitted Thing of the Day: Daphne O’Donoghue, Joy Pearson, Joyce McDonagh, Margaret Goldup (above) and several other members of the Mersham Afternoon Club in Mersham, Kent, have spent the last 23 years knitting a scale model of their entire village, complete with cricket pitch, cabbage patches, and teenagers slouching on their way to school.

“We read about another village that’d done it, and we thought we’d give it a whirl,” Ms. McDonagh told the Telegraph. “But we’d no idea what we’d bitten off, it just sort of grew and grew and grew.”

The project is one of the longest-running—and probably the most exhaustive—longitudinal studies of mental and physical well-being in history. Begun in 1937 as a study of healthy, well-adjusted Harvard sophomores (all male), it has followed its subjects for more than 70 years … But hidden amid the shimmering successes were darker hues. As early as 1948, 20 members of the group displayed severe psychiatric difficulties. By age 50, almost a third of the men had at one time or another met Vaillant’s criteria for mental illness. Underneath the tweed jackets of these Harvard elites beat troubled hearts.

Both fascinating and terrifying. I’m certain that if this were carried out with the class of 2009, we’d all turn out similarly neurotic.

This is an app a friend an I are working on. Right now, we call it “Welcome to the Tumbledome” which will no doubt change. It shows a grid of people you follow and all their updates since the last time you logged into the app. Hover over an avatar to see their username and click it to view a brief summary of unread posts, complete with clickable URLs and all that bullshit.

It will be done hopefully by May and will be available as both a web and Adobe AIR app.

Denver Airports Controversial 32 FT Zombie Mustang Sculpture.
The back-story here is that the sculptor, Luis Jimenez was killed in 2006 when after completing this sculpture, it toppled over onto him, severing his femoral artery (inner thigh) and killing him from exsanguination. Enjoy this picture because, this sculpture is being removed due to its’ controversial nature.

i think the sculpture- and this pic- are badass.
